On the afternoon of June 21st, the conclusion ceremony for the 2018 “Belt and Road Economic Law Student Practice Center” Project was held on Changning Campus. Ling Shurong, the Director of the Bureau of Justice of Jing’an District, Shanghai, and Xia Fei, the Director of the International Exchange Center of ECUPL, attended the meeting, as well as many other leaders and guests from ECUPL, representatives of 14 law firms, and 35 students from the Belt and Road High Economic Law master’s class. The meeting was presided over by Lai Jinsheng, the Deputy Director of the International Exchange Center.
In her speech, Ling Shurong congratulated all the students for successfully completing the internship and obtaining their degrees. She thanked ECUPL for its trust in 14 law firms in Jing’an, thanked the law firms for their meticulous arrangements for students’ internships, and said that the Jing’an Bureau of Justice will continue to cooperate with ECUPL, the Jing’an District Legal Work Committee, and various law firms in order to run the project, so as to contribute to the cultivation of “Belt and Road Initiative” international law experts.
Outstanding student representatives and mentors from law firms spoke separately. Three students, Luangchandavong Chandalany from Laos, Mwakatobe Lupyana Thomas from Tanzania, and Khin Nwe Thi from Mayanmar, expressed their gratitude towards ECUPL, Jing’an District Bureau of Justice and the 14 law firms in their speeches. The six-week internship experience in China’s top law firms enabled them to not only learn Chinese legal theory in the classroom, but also to truly engage in legal practice, which greatly deepened their understanding of China’s legal system. Afterwards, representatives of the law firms congratulated the students in their speeches, looked back on those six weeks and the friendships they had made with the students, and looked forward to receiving their feedback so they can further optimize the program.
Xia Fei congratulated the students on successfully completing the internship and obtaining the master’s degree, and thanked the Shanghai Bureau of Justice, the Jing’an District Bureau of Justice, the Shanghai Lawyers Association, the Jing’an District Legal Work Committee, and the 14 law firms for their strong support and contribution to the national cause of education. She also expressed her belief that the “Belt and Road Economic Law Student Practice Center” Project would become even better in the future.
The Jing’an District Bureau of Justice and all law firms also prepared summary albums and souvenirs for the meeting. These small gifts, which recorded the students’ progress through their practical activities, carry good memories for all those who participated in the project.
The agreement for the “Belt and Road Economic Law Student Practice Center” Project was officially signed and the project began in September 2017, and in April the following year, the students of "Youth of Excellence Scheme of China" officially began internships at various law firms. They completed many academic and internship tasks under the guidance of double tutors at the university and in the law firms, respectively.
