The closing ceremony of the 2018 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) China Summer School was held on Changning campus on September 21. Mr. Joe Bradley, Director of the WIPO Academy, and Professor Chen Jingying, Vice President of ECUPL, attended and spoke at the closing ceremony. Ma Le, Deputy Director of the International Exchange Center of ECUPL, Hu Ye, Party Secretary and Associate Dean of the School of Intellectual Property, Professor Huang Wushuang, Dean of the School of Intellectual Propertys, and Liu Guanglong, Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Intellectual Property, attended the ceremony. The closing ceremony was presided over by Huang Wushuang.
Chen Jingying congratulated the students on their completion of all Summer School courses, and thanked the experts, teachers and staff who worked on the program. She stressed that improving the management and protection of intellectual property (IP) plays a vital role in scientific and technological innovations. As the forefront of China's Economic Reform and Opening Up, Shanghai is striving to function as Five Centers and to establish Four Major Brands, and making unswerving efforts to build Shanghai into the center of IP in the Asia-Pacific region. Therefore, ECUPL tries to seize every opportunity for development, gives full play to people’s abilities and geographical advantages, and makes great efforts to establish a high-level of IP education and an ideal location for research. Chen Jingying said that all of these cannot be achieved without the support of excellent professionals, and the launch of the WIPO China Summer School serves this purpose well. She also hoped that the trainees of the program would contribute their wisdom and strength to the development of IP in the future.
Mr. Joe Bradley said that this year marked the 20th anniversary of the WIPO Summer School. Students from different countries and various backgrounds had undertaken the program. Among them were both law school students and technical personnel in different fields, such as engineers and financial analysts, which is a precise indication that the knowledge of IP is increasingly important for people from all walks of life. He praised the high quality of this Summer School and the completion of the courses by the students, and pointed out that the end of the summer program is actually a fresh start for them, as they will likely need this knowledge of IP for a lifetime regardless of their future career.
In his closing speech, Kieran said on behalf of the foreign students that taking part in the summer program was a wonderful trip -gaining rich knowledge of IP and of Chinese law in the classes at ECUPL, making good friends with students from various countries, and eating local food in Shanghai, all of which were completely unforgettable.
On behalf of the Chinese students, Zhou Junrui said that as a junior college student, taking part in the WIPO Summer Program was both a challenge and an opportunity for her. Although the classes were completely in English, she and her classmates held on and acquired a lot of professional knowledge. Also, she became acquainted with many lovely teachers and classmates during the two weeks, which was well worth all the efforts.
Lastly, Chen Jingying and Mr. Joe Bradley presented graduation certificates to the students and took photos with them.
