2018 World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) China Summer School Held at ECUPL

The 201World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO ) China Summer School program opened on Changning Campus of ECUPL on September 10. This is the second time the program has been held by ECUPL. The Consultant for WIPO China Lu Guoqiang, the Deputy Director of the Shanghai Intellectual Property Bureau Rui Wenbiao, and the Vice President of ECUPL Chen Jingying attended and spoke at the opening ceremony of the Summer School. Xia Feithe Director of the International Exchange Center of ECUPL, Ma Le, the Deputy Director of the International Exchange Center of ECUPL, Hu Ye, the Party Secretary and Associate Dean of the School of Intellectual Property, and Liu Guanglong, the Deputy Party Secretary of the School of Intellectual Property, also attended the meeting. The opening ceremony was presided over by Professor Huang Wushuang, the Dean of the School of Intellectual Property.

In his speech, Mr. Lu said that the WIPO Academy is committed to carrying out education and training in intellectual property for WIPO member states, in particular for developing countries, least developed countries ( LDC ) and countries in transition, and that the Summer School was an important part of its work. At present, the WIPO Academy has held 87 summer schools with more than 3000 participants around the world.  He pointed out that the training of intellectual property professionals is of great significance to promoting the creation and application of intellectual property(IP) and improving its management and protection. In 2015, the WIPO China Summer Program was introduced to China for the first time and was successfully held at ECUPL, and was widely acclaimed. Due to the high quality of the education at ECUPL and the close cooperation between the two sides over the years, the Summer School this year will again be held at ECUPL. Mr. Lu also wished great success to the Summer School and hoped it will bring positive results.

Rui Wenbiao said in his speech that IP plays an important role in promoting innovation and development, and functions as a key factor in improving the city's core competitiveness and creating a favourable business environment. Talented IP workers are the key foundation for promoting innovation and developing IP.  Shanghai has always valued and developed IP at a strategic level. With the goal of becoming the center of IP in the Asia-Pacific region where high-end workers gather, Shanghai has continuously improved the top-level designing of IP, explored reform in the field of IP, and strengthened the creation, protection, and applications of IP. Shanghai has succeeded in establishing the Shanghai International Intellectual Property Institute, and in introducing the WIPO Summer Program, joint master’s degree programs with WIPO, and master's degree programs in IP in Belt and Road Initiative partner countries. This summer School is the second time Shanghai and WIPO have cooperated together. It is a step forward in implementing the Memorandum of Cooperation signed by the Shanghai Municipal Government and WIPO, and beneficial endeavor to innovate the style of IP training as well.

Chen Jingying extended a warm welcome to the guests, teachers and students, and sincerely thanked the China office of the World Intellectual Property Organization, the Shanghai Intellectual Property Bureau and other related organizations for their strong support for ECUPL in holding this program. She pointed out that WIPO again choosing ECUPL as the host of China Summer Program not only demonstrates their mutual trust and close cooperation, but also marks another important achievement in the development strategy held by ECUPL: Transparent, International and Innovative. In the two-week Summer School program schedule, ECUPL would provide more than 30 well-designed course topics, including international copyright and its latest development, international patent protection, an overview of international trademarks, trade secrets, protection of genetic resources, traditional culture and art, registration and protection of geographical indications, protection of new varieties of plants, evaluation and management of IP, and law enforcement of IPLectures would be given by famous experts and scholars from WIPO, the Supreme People's Court, the State Administration of Market Supervision, Shanghai High People's Court, Shanghai Intellectual Property Court, Peking University, Fudan University, Southwest University of Political Science and Law, Zhongnan University of Economics and Law, Shanghai University of Political Science and Law, King & Wood Mallesons, AllBright Law firm, the Shanghai branches of US law firm Baker & McKenzie and UK law firm Bird & Bird, Beijing Wanhuida Intellectual Property Agency Co. Ltd, and other well-known domestic universities, government agencies, judicial institutions, and service agencies. In addition, there would be simulation traininggroup discussionvisits to law firms, case studies, and other activities to integrate high-quality resources and help students acquire thorough and in-depth IP knowledge.


The summer school program is taught in English and will last two weeks. More than 60 students from 12 countries, including China, Russia, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Brazil, Malaysia, India, Kenya and Zimbabwe will participate in this program. Upon completion of the training course, the students will receive a certificate issued by the WIPO Academy. As a global certification issued by international organizations, the certificate is widely acknowledged in the field of IP and is a proof of the owners' professionalism.
