On Dec 12, International School held the “Exploration and Innovation - International Chinese Language Education Seminar and Opening Ceremony for Virtual Teaching and Research Office for Business Chinese”. Fan Yuji, Dean of the School of Communication, Wu Qiaofang, Dean of International School, Zhang Lijun and Li Yong, Associate Deans of International School, full-time teachers Li Xuefeng and Duan Shali as well as teaching secretary Quan Lina attended the meeting. Special guests include Sun Bing, Dean of International Cultural Exchange School of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, Wang Yanyan, Vice Dean of School of International Chinese Language Education of Shanghai University of International Business and Economics, Zhou Yang, Associate Professor of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, as well as Senior Lecturers of Chinese Language in New York University Shanghai, Shui Xiaobo, Song Ying, and Huang Xiaoyue. The meeting was hosted by Li Xuefeng, Director of the Teaching and Research office for Chinese as a Foreign Language.
In her opening speech, Wu Qiaofang, started by proposing that the construction of the new liberal arts could be strengthened through mutual visits of teachers, cross-campus research, and talent training, thus promoting the long-term development of international Chinese language education. Wu Qiaofang pointed out that training sessions and competitions for teachers are effective means to help young teachers develop. She also emphasized the need to strengthen theoretical learning, build a course case library, and optimize teaching modes to improve the quality of student training.
The seminar consists of two themes: “Curriculum and Teaching” and “Academic Research”. First, the three teachers from NYU Shanghai shared their rich teaching experience from two aspects: teaching techniques and curriculum design for different levels and types of Chinese education, providing useful case resources for the construction of the virtual teaching and research office. Afterwards, Associate Professor Zhou Yang from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics gave a presentation on “The Mutual Inspiration of Domestic Language Legislation Research and International Chinese Language Education”. He pointed out that in the context of internationalization of education, to better present Chinese culture to the world, legislation should play the leading role. Wu Qiaofang and Fan Yuji affirmed the research value of this topic respectively from the perspectives of Forensic Linguistics and Communication Sciences. Dr. Duan Shali, a professional teacher of International School gave a presentation on “Online Chinese Teaching Based on the ‘Seamless Learning’ Theory”. Wang Yanyan and Huang Xiaoyue gave constructive suggestions on the theoretical model of Seamless Learning and the design of seamless Chinese learning.
The seminar was a success, which has not only provided new ideas for international Chinese language education, but also built a platform for the communication and development of younger teachers. It has promoted interaction between teaching and academic research.
