Qatar International Court and Dispute Resolution Center delegation visits ECUPL

On November 13, the delegates of Qatar InternationalCourt and Dispute Resolution Center led by its president Lord Thomas, who isalso a former Chief Judge in Britain and Wales, came to visit ECUPL. ProfessorLUO Peixin, Vice president of ECUPL, Professor WU Qiaofang, the Director ofInternational Exchange Center and Dean of International School, Associate Professor Han Yichou and Ms. Zhang Lijun,Deputy Directors of International exchange center, Professor Liang Shuang,Associate Dean of international Finance School and Ms. Tang Jing, Foreignaffairs official of Shanghai High People’s Court warmly received the delegatesand engaged in the exchange of ideas.

Luo Peixin extended a heartfelt welcome to thedelegation of QICDRC, highlighting the pivotal role of Qatar as a strategicalpartner of China’s Belt and Road Initiatives. He presented the delegates withan overview of the university, covering its history, the disciplinedevelopment, and talent cultivation. Professor Luo made a special mention ofECUPL’s long-standing commitment to strengthening international exchange andcooperationfostering greater internationalcomprehension, and exploring avenues of collaboration across diverse domains.He envisions that the meeting can promote the collaboration between bothparties in the realms of education and judicial services, thus facilitating thelong-term construction and development of legislation in both countries.

Thomas expressed his gratitude for the warm receptionat our university and shared detailed insights into the historical background,institutional structure, and composition of judges at Qatar International Courtand Dispute Resolution Center. The institution boasts renowned and experiencedjudges from around the world, recognized for their expertise, independence,impartiality, integrity and propriety. Similarly, the lawyers involved inlitigation hail from various parts of the globe. During his discussion on thelitigation procedure, Thomas primarily focused on the issue of jurisdiction atthe International Court in handling international disputes. When it comes toimproving efficiency in litigation, Thomas expanded on the unique features ofthe smart court in Qatar and mentioned his observations from the Shanghai HighPeople's Court, where he witnessed the adoption of digital systems to enhanceefficiency. He expressed his hopes for further exchange of experience in thisfield with specialists at ECUPL in the future. Moreover, the QatarInternational Court and the Dispute Resolution Center provides an internshipprogram tailored to assist prospective lawyers in gaining insight into thelegal world, and enhancing their personal and professional development.

Representatives from both sides actively engaged inacademic discussions on topics such as smart courts, recognition andenforcement of judgments, judicial fairness, and more. They also looked at thepossibilities of establishing collaborative projects in spheres of legalpractice seminars, student internships, joint research, etc., with the aim ofsigning a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) as an expression of mutual interestin prospective partnership.

After the meeting, Thomas and his delegates visitedChangning campus and the Suzhou River waterfront trail.
