WMO Representative Delivers Video Address at the 22nd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference, Strengthening Cooperation with East China University of Political Science and Law to Promote Climate Governance Talent Development

On May 29, at the 22nd Asian Law Institute (ASLI) Annual Conference held at East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL), two representatives of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) delivered a special video address emphasizing the importance of enhanced cooperation with academic institutions across Asia.The address highlighted recent progress in collaboration between WMO and ECUPL.This message became one of the highlights of the conference, reflecting ASLI’s commitment to fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and regional cooperation.

Ms. Brigitta Exterkate, Director of the WMO Administration Division, stated in her speech that productive discussions have already taken place between the WMO Executive Office and ECUPL. “Our initial discussions have brought forward possible avenues of cooperation. One of the topics we discussed is the possibility of exchange of interns and discuss the possibility of training. This initiativeen riches students learning with real world insights, fostering a new generation of professionals, equipped to tackle water, weather and climate governance challenges. Additionally, our internship and joint training programs are empowering future generations with the skills to drive global expertise in the domain of weather, water, and climate. ” She also noted that potential collaboration between WMO and members of the ASLI would offer excellent opportunities to deepen research and academic exchange regarding governance and legal frameworks.

Ms. Brigitte Perrin, Chief of the WMO Strategic Communication Office, remarked, “This year, WMO marks its75th anniversary. It is a perfect time to reflect not only on our legacy, but on the critical role we play in safeguarding lives and building resilience in achanging world. WMO is more than weather forecasts. We are a global coordination platform for weather, water, and climate data, essential for early warnings, disaster preparedness, and long term climate resilience. ” She further emphasized, “As we face escalating climate and extreme weather risks,WMO is committed to building partnerships and collaborations to foster innovation in global governance, in research, and in communication. We thank the Asian Law Institute for the opportunity to share our story. And we look forward to continued collaboration in support of a more resilient, informed,unprepared world, we wish you full success for the conference. ”

The conference gathered a wide range of experts and scholars from Asia’s legal field to discuss cross-disciplinary issues spanning law, governance, and climate science. Participants expressed strong interest and positive evaluations of the collaboration between WMO and ECUPL, recognizing it as a breakthrough for developing regional expertise in meteorological and climate governance, and as a model for integrating scientific research, legal norms, and policymaking.

East China University of Political Science and Law will continue to work closely together with the WMO to nurture future talents with an international perspective and professional capabilities, supporting regional and global responses to escalating climatechange and sustainable development challenges.
